What does it look like when someone’s career and their community overlap?

Dennis Smith shares what it has meant to him to call Squamish home for more than two decades, and then find an opportunity with Woodfibre that allowed him to build relationships in the community he has grown to love and admire. Being a good neighbour is at the heart of everything he does at Woodfibre LNG.

Meet Dennis

For Dennis, Squamish isn’t just where he lives, it’s where he’s grown into the person he is today. After more than 22 years in this community Dennis has watched the town grow, raised a family, and built a career defined by one consistent value: people first.

That commitment has deep roots across the Sea to Sky corridor.

Before joining Woodfibre LNG, Dennis spent nearly a decade at Sea to Sky Community Services, where he managed affordable housing and facilities programs that made a real difference for low- and moderate-income residents across the region. Prior to that, he worked as a Special Education Assistant in the West Vancouver School District, guided kayak tours along the shores of Bowen Island, and led corporate team-building events at Canadian Outback Adventures. Whatever the setting, the throughline was always the same: show up for people, build trust, and leave things better than you found them.

Dennis joined Woodfibre LNG in 2019 as Facilities Manager, before stepping into community-focused roles, first as Manager of Community Relations and Housing, and now as Manager of Community Affairs. Over more than seven years, he has grown alongside the project, building relationships and goodwill that make our long-term community and philanthropic partnerships possible.

A Career Rooted in Values

For Dennis, what he loves most about his job is getting to connect with people. He gets to build relationships, and champion a project he genuinely believes in.

As a director of the Westwind Seniors Housing Society board, Dennis has witnessed first-hand how Woodfibre LNG’s community grants are making a tangible difference. He has watched the company’s funding strengthen the local scholarship program at Squamish Secondary, opening doors for the next generation. And the donation of a CT scanner to the local hospital also carries personal meaning to Dennis, as someone who has needed that kind of care himself.

Another element of his work that excites him is the culture he sees growing within the Woodfibre LNG team. Newer and longer-tenured colleagues alike are coaching youth sports, volunteering at food banks, supporting local charities, and turning up for community pitch-in weeks. For Dennis, that kind of engagement isn’t a box-checking exercise, it’s a reflection of who they are and what it means to work at Woodfibre LNG.

At the core of his approach to community engagement is integrity: “We say what we do, and we do what we say. People need to know you stand behind your word.” For a project committed to being part of Squamish for the long term, trust and transparency are invaluable.
