Seven new recipients of Woodfibre LNG’s Community Sponsorship Program

$24,000 in grants awarded in support of education, youth sports and environment initiatives in Squamish

SQUAMISH, B.C. – Woodfibre LNG Limited is proud to announce that $24,000 in grants have been awarded to seven new recipients of our Community Sponsorship Program. The announcement was made during a Community Partnership Celebration at the Woodfibre LNG/FortisBC Community Office in Squamish on Thursday, April 28, 2016.

Officially launched on May 12, 2015, the Community Sponsorship Program offers individual grants of up to $5,000 per year to local charities and community groups that work in areas of education, youth sports and environmental initiatives in Squamish.

The Spring 2016 recipients of the program are:

• Team Squamish, Cross Country Mountain Bike race club ($5,000 grant)
• Evans Lake Forestry Society, forestry and outdoor education camp / programs ($5,000 grant)
• Squamish Valley Golf Club, youth golf development program ($5,000 grant)
• Whistler Adaptive Sports Program, to expand its programs into Squamish ($5,000 grant)
• Sea to Sky Forestry Centre Society, resource development education ($2,000 grant)
• Squamish Dirt Bike Association, off-road dirt bike club ($1,000 grant)
• Howe Sound Minor Ball, structured baseball program ($1,000 grant)

The Community Sponsorship Program is just one part of Woodfibre LNG Limited’s commitment to give back to the local community. Since 2013, Woodfibre LNG has contributed more than $215,000 (including the Community Sponsorship Program grants) to groups and events that help make Squamish such a vibrant community.

To apply, community groups are encouraged to visit Woodfibre LNG’s website (woodfibrelng.ca/community), where criteria and the application form can be found. Applications for the next round of funding will be accepted until September 30, 2016. All applications will be reviewed by a Community Sponsorship Committee, which is made up of Woodfibre LNG employees.

“Whistler Adaptive is thrilled to receive the funding from Woodfibre LNG for our Squamish programming expansion,” said Chelsey Walker, Executive Director, Whistler Adaptive Sports Program. “Kids of all ages and abilities will be able to access weekly programs and be given the opportunity to work with adaptive equipment, if needed, while being in an inclusive and encouraging environment.”

“The Sea to Sky Forestry Centre Society plans to create a series of videos on the eco-heritage of Squamish,” said Mike Wallace, President, Sea to Sky Forestry Centre. “Funding from Woodfibre LNG will play a valuable role in sharing Squamish Nation history, the history of resource development in the area and the transportation history of the region.”

“This money from Woodfibre LNG will be added to funding from other sources to build 500 metres of challenging trail to create an eight kilometre loop in between Ring Creek and the Mamquam River in the area of the Lava Flow trail network,” said Ed Alder of the Squamish Dirt Bike Association. “The dirt bike community really appreciates the contributions from all the funders to make this project possible.”

“The money will go to purchasing baseball bats, supporting our annual coaches’ clinic, and bringing back the Big League Experience, a performance clinic for kids,” said John Hawkings, President of Baseball, Howe Sound Minor Ball Association. “By supporting our coaches and player development, we can continue growing participation in our league and providing excellent sports opportunities for hundreds of kids in Squamish”.
