Congratulations Átl’ka7tsem/ Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative

SQUAMISH – Woodfibre LNG congratulates the Átl’ka7tsem/ Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative on becoming Canada’s 19th UNESCO Biosphere Region and applauds their many years of hard work in the lead up to this decision.

Woodfibre LNG is also committed to protecting Átl’ka7tsem/ Howe Sound and supports any initiative that will help to preserve our region’s wilderness. The health of Átl’ka7tsem/ Howe Sound and the animals that live in and around it are considered in every aspect of our project and to that aim, we have spent over $12 million cleaning up the 100 year old pulp and paper mill that once existed at Swíyat.

Since our site remediation began, we have removed over 4,000 creosote piles from the foreshore, recycled over 12,000m3 of old stockpiled concrete and created over 78,000 person-hours of employment for Sea to Sky businesses. Soon we will be closing and capping the mill’s old landfill.

The UNESCO biosphere reserve program promotes balancing economic growth with conservation. This is an objective that we wholeheartedly support. We remain committed to building the most innovative and sustainable LNG project in the world. Woodfibre LNG is proud to be the first industrial project in Canada – and possibly the world – which recognizes an Indigenous People, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, as a full environmental regulator (in the absence of a treaty). We would be eager to share this success story as part of How Átl’ka7tsem/ Howe Sound’s UNESCO designation.

About the Woodfibre LNG project

The Woodfibre LNG Project is located approximately 7 km west-southwest of Squamish, British Columbia. It involves the construction and operation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility on the previous Woodfibre pulp mill site, which would have a storage capacity of 250,000 m3 and would produce approximately 2.1 million tonnes per year of LNG. Woodfibre LNG Limited is a privately held Canadian company based in Vancouver, and a subsidiary of Pacific Oil & Gas Limited.
