Woodfibre LNG announces a $100,000 community sponsorship program
May 12, 2015
SQUAMISH, B.C. – Woodfibre LNG Limited today announced a $100,000 Community Sponsorship Program to support local charities and community groups throughout the District of Squamish. Today’s announcement was made during a Community Partnership Celebration at the Woodfibre LNG Project/Fortis BC Community Office in Squamish.
“Woodfibre LNG is a proud member of the community and since 2013, we have given more than $100,000 to organizations throughout Squamish,” said John French, Community Relations Manager for Woodfibre LNG. “This program allows us to formalize our commitment to local organizations, provide clarity to community groups who are seeking funding, and to celebrate the great work these groups do for the entire community.”
This Community Sponsorship Program will allow Woodfibre LNG to clarify its sponsorship application process for community groups and provide consistency on the distribution and allocation of community funding. The Community Sponsorship Program will award grants on a semi-annual basis. The program will continue Woodfibre LNG’s existing focus on Squamish-based organizations that work in the areas of education or youth sports, or that work on environmental initiatives.
“If our project is approved and built, Woodfibre LNG will be a member of this community for more than 25 years. We are proud to be part of Squamish and excited to be supporting the many community groups that help to make this such a great place to live and work,” said Byng Giraud, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Woodfibre LNG.
At today’s event, Woodfibre LNG announced $25,000 in grants to kick off the program. Those grants went to the following five community groups:
- Axemen Rugby Club
- Squamish Slo-Pitch Association
- Howe Sound Minor Ball
- Squamish Minor Hockey Association
- Squamish Youth Soccer Association
“The Squamish Slo-Pitch Association is working with the youth soccer and the youth baseball organizations to install a new lighting system at Hendrickson Fields using a portion of this funding,” said Paul Dosanjh, President of the Squamish Slo-Pitch Association. “Over the past number of years it has been increasingly difficult to schedule game and practice times due to the demand far exceeding the supply of suitable and safe playing fields in the community of Squamish. The installation of lights at Hendrickson Fields will dramatically reduce the overall scheduling conflicts and create more playing and practice times across all of the local fields.”
To apply for the Community Sponsorship Program, community groups are encouraged to visit Woodfibre LNG’s website (www.woodfibrelng.ca), where criteria and the application form can be found. Applications for the next round of funding will be accepted until September 30, 2015. All applications will be reviewed by a Community Sponsorship Committee, which will be made up of Woodfibre LNG employees.
