Project

The Woodfibre LNG Project is located approximately 7 km west-southwest of Squamish, British Columbia. It involves constructing and operating a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility on the previous Woodfibre pulp mill site, which would have a storage capacity of 250,000 m3 and produce approximately 2.1 million tonnes per year of LNG.

Position

The Senior Electrical Engineer (Operations) is the technical authority overseeing the Electrical systems of the Woodfibre LNG plant. Prior to start-up of the plant, you will work closely with Project Electrical lead to ensure that all systems designed, built, and commissioned to ensure safe and reliable operations for the operating phase of the plant. During Operations, you are the subject matter expert for all issues relating Electrical equipment. The responsibilities encompass ensuring the seamless operation of electrical systems, requiring a blend of technical proficiency, project management acumen, and a dedication to optimizing operational efficiency. The successful candidate reports directly to the Engineering Manager and will play an essential part in supporting the company through the construction phase of the project into steady state operations.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Collaborate with Project staff and Contractors during the early Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) phase to provide quality surveillance and review support on Electrical equipment design, installation, and testing.
  • Work in conjunction with the Plant Maintenance team and Project Staff to review and approve maintenance strategies and spare parts requirements, supporting the Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS – SAP) during the EPC stage.
  • Provide support to Project Engineers during the commissioning and start-up phase, ensuring the application of prudent procedures for a safe and successful plant start-up.
  • Act as the resident subject-matter-expert in the plant for issues related to Electrical equipment after achieving steady-state operations, including:
    – Provide guidance to maintenance and operations teams, particularly in complicated and critical cases, including the development of equipment strategies/programs and operating procedures during turnarounds.
    – Lead diagnostic efforts for rapid recovery during forced outages and instances where equipment is not performing to specifications.
    – Lead Root-Cause-Analysis efforts for failures to eradicate root causes.
    – Initiate and manage plant changes for electrical equipment to ensure their continuous safety and reliability.
    – Interface with BC Hydro at specialized technical level to electrical transitions in power supply to the plant are adequately managed and long-term robust design of the connection is maintained.
    – Interface with regulatory authorities (TS BC) to ensure compliance with Canadian technical standards for operating electrical equipment.
    – Manage the site electrical permit to work requirements.
  • Direct and mentor junior engineers to contribute to their professional growth and development.

Required Experience

  • Electrical Engineering Degree or equivalent. Only candidates with Canadian Professional Engineering registration will be considered.
  • Minimum 15 years as Electrical Engineer, preferably in an LNG Production Facility.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Electrical equipment and systems such as Power Generation, Power Distribution, electrical apparatus / devices, Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Electrical testing techniques, both destructive and non-destructive.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Electrical repair procedures, including welding and heat-treatment. 
  • Advanced working knowledge in at least 80% of the following areas relating to Electrical equipment and good working knowledge in the remaining:
    – Generators and Motors
    – Transformers and Switchgears
    – Electrical devices such as Power Factor correction gadgets
    – Electrical equipment in cryogenic application.
    – Safety protection systems such as Arc-Flash and Intrinsic applications
    – Hazardous environment classifications and electrical operations within such installations 
    – Condition monitoring techniques such as Infra-Red thermography, megohmmeter testing, high potential or dielectric withstand test, power signature analysis, battery impedance testing, surge and hi-pot testing
    – Machinery Monitoring systems
    – Applicable codes such as CSA, API, NPC (National Building Code), ISO and NFPA
    – Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)

Additional Requirements

  • Proven leadership skills to lead teams and mentor junior staff.
  • A motivated person with a mentoring and coaching approach.
  • Energetic in pursuit of continuous improvement processes.
  • Experience working with large multi-disciplinary teams and contractors in a multicultural environment is an asset.
  • Communication/interpersonal skills – interacting with front-line workers through to management and all hierarchical levels.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks, and change priorities within tight time frames.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Expertise with a variety of computer programs.
  • A valid driver’s license and passport.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • This role will be a combination of office and site based.
  • The position is based in Squamish, BC (Project Site), with an initial stay period at the Vancouver Office, followed by travel to the Module Fabrication Yards in China and a visit to Houston project office as required.
