Anderson Tanoto – RGE Managing Director

Anderson Tanoto Profile
Anderson Tanoto

Anderson Tanoto is an economics graduate from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is actively involved in the fibre business at Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), where he serves as Managing Director and a member of the Executive Management Board. RGE is a group of world-class, resource-based manufacturing companies focusing on responsible and sustainable resource management. RGE operates in Indonesia, China, Brazil, Canada, Spain, and Malaysia, with over US$35 billion in assets and a workforce of over 80,000 people.

Anderson leads RGE’s strategic growth initiatives and is actively involved in the group’s operations and business transformation efforts, particularly those related to sustainability at all of RGE’s business groups, including the Woodfibre LNG Project.

The Woodfibre LNG Project is a natural gas liquefaction and export facility designed to produce 2.1 million tonnes of LNG (liquefied natural gas) per year for overseas markets, supporting the world’s transition away from more carbon-intensive energy sources.

Woodfibre LNG will source its natural gas from Pacific Canbriam Energy, a Canadian company recognised as an industry leader in responsible natural gas production, with operations in Northeastern British Columbia. Woodfibre LNG and Pacific Canbriam Energy are subsidiaries of Pacific Energy Corporation Limited, a member of the Singapore-based RGE group of companies.

Anderson Tanoto has expressed excitement about achieving a significant milestone: the world’s first Net Zero LNG export facility. He has been collaborating closely with colleagues from Woodfibre LNG in Houston and Vancouver, and is proud that Woodfibre LNG is the first LNG export facility in the world to commit to achieving net zero emissions by 2027.

Under Anderson’s leadership and vision, Woodfibre LNG’s net zero roadmap prioritises emissions avoidance and reduction opportunities. Woodfibre LNG will also be one of the first Electric Drive LNG plants on the West Coast of North America, powered by renewable hydroelectricity. This approach significantly reduces emissions compared to other LNG plants in the world. Hard to abate emissions will be offset through carbon credits generated from nature-based solutions within British Columbia and Canada.

Anderson emphasises that he will not stop here; he will continue to strive for more sustainability initiatives within Woodfibre LNG to bring responsibly produced Canadian LNG to the world.

A young emerging business leader, Anderson Tanoto serves as Chairman for the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s (KADIN) Brazil Committee and has been KADIN’s representative to Canada since 2018. Anderson is also a Champion for Nature at the World Economic Forum (WEF). He has held memberships in the Tropical Forest Alliance 2020’s Southeast Asia Regional Committee, Wharton Executive Board for Asia, and WEF’s Global Agenda Council on Forests. As member of the Board of Trustees of the Tanoto Foundation, Anderson drives programmes focussed on forging international partnerships with reputable universities and developing leaders of the next generation. He co-founded Asia’s first SDG Academy in 2019 with Indonesia’s Ministry of Development Planning and the UN Development Programme. He has also been recognised by Forbes as one of Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy.
