Sqomish Forestry to re-use historical log sort and booming area near Squamish

SQUAMISH, BC — Beginning August 4th, 2016, there will be an increase in activity at the Woodfibre LNG site.

Sqomish Forestry LP will be using the Woodfibre LNG site, which is located about seven kilometres southwest of Squamish, to carryout log handling operations during the 2016 harvesting season.

Sqomish Forestry will be:

– Logging in cut blocks, which are located outside of the Woodfibre site.

– Sorting and bundling logs in the historical log sort area of the Woodfibre site.

– Managing log booms in the foreshore of our site and transporting the log booms to Galbraith Log Sort in Squamish for further processing.

“Sqomish Forestry log handling operations are expected to last about three months and employ about 25 people,” said Jeff Fisher, President, Sqomish Forestry LP, “something that would not have been possible without the agreement of Woodfibre LNG Limited and we are thankful for their cooperation.”

“Supporting jobs in the local community is important to us,” said Byng Giraud, Country Manager and Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Woodfibre LNG Limited. “So while we wait to break ground on the Woodfibre LNG Project, we are happy to work with Sqomish Forestry LP, and at least temporarily breathe new life into the decommissioned pulp mill site.”

Sqomish Forestry LP and Woodfibre LNG Limited are committed to safe operations on land and in the water.

At the height of log handling operations, the booming and the transportation of the logs are expected to occur two to three days per week, depending on tides, weather, wood volumes, and other factors.  With that in mind, marine water users are being encouraged to be aware of log storage and transportation activities between the Woodfibre LNG site and Squamish to ensure the safe shared use of the waterway.
