Project
The Woodfibre LNG Project is located approximately 7 km west-southwest of Squamish, British Columbia. It involves the construction and operation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility on the previous Woodfibre pulp mill site, which would have a storage capacity of 250,000 m3 and would produce approximately 2.1 million tonnes per year of LNG.

Position
The Process Safety Engineer is integral to Woodfibre LNG’s engineering team. Woodfibre is seeking candidates to work during the detailed engineering phase; work is currently being executed in the contractor’s offices in Houston. This phase of work is expected to last for a total of 24 months, followed by a fabrication, installation and commissioning phase. The successful candidate reports directly to the Engineering Manager and will work closely with the Sr. Process Engineer to ensure that the export facility design satisfies all industry and Woodfibre Management Ltd. Standards..
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
- Assist the Sr. Process Engineer with matters related to process safety and fire protection engineering and application to the detailed engineering phase.
- Liaise and coordinate across all project disciplines for process safety and fire protection engineering.
- Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, QRA and other process safety studies and reviews.
- Oversee Contractor process safety and fire protection reviews and develop recommendations for addressing potential process safety and fire protection issues.
- Provide risk assessment recommendations using risk analysis techniques and tools.
- Monitor and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes to the facility design.
- Provide project support, including support for process engineering to fully develop process and fire protection packages and modelling software applications.
- Review Contractor’s MTOs, design basis, design allowances and cost information and comment on cost reduction.
- Review subcontractor quotes, quantities and execution approach focusing on cost reduction.
- Manage and coordinate Company progress, quality and schedule milestones and deliverables.
- Liaise and coordinate with the contractor during site activities.
- Support the delivery and handover of the facility to Company Operations.
- Ensure the facility design meets Company expectations.
- 100% compliance with company HSSE policies and guidelines.
- Demonstrate a personal commitment to influence overall HSSE behaviour.
- Support and input to HSSE risk register and mitigation processes.
Required Experience
- 15+ years of process safety and fire protection engineering in Oil & Gas, Onshore & Offshore, and LNG industries; BS Engineering.
- Well-versed in major codes, standards, and best practices.
- Experience in providing supervision to Contractor process safety and fire protection engineers.
- Familiar with and capable of utilizing essential process safety and fire protection engineering software.
- Experience with QRA, Process Hazard Analysis, SIL and safety reviews.
- Experience with gas dispersion and fire radiation modelling, passive and active fire protection systems, fire water demand calculations, and fire and gas detection systems.
- Review vendor proposals for fire and gas detection and process safety systems.
- Experience and knowledge of process safety design for modularized facilities.
- Strong attention to detail and capable of performing detailed document and drawing reviews of both Contractor and vendor deliverables.
- Demonstrated ability for the development of reports for and presentations to management.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to build relationships quickly in multi-disciplinary, multicultural, and multi-company environments.
- Highly responsible with a demonstrated commitment to the delivery of tasks and targets.
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to see the project through to completion.
- Visits to vendor’s works, substation yard(s), module fabrication yard and the site as required.
- Willingness to undertake other business travel when required.
- Experience working with large multi-disciplinary teams and contractors in a multicultural environment is an asset.
